Research group
Caracterization, Corrosion and Degradation of Materials of Technological Interest
Department
Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering
Faculty / Institute
Faculty of Chemical Science
Group description
The research group has over 30 years of experience in the field of corrosion, degradation and protection of advanced materials, such as steels, light alloys and metal matrix composites. The group is interested in alloy engineering and tailoring of surface functional properties. A range of available facilities for that purpose include corrosion tests, tribological equipment and access to alloy manufacturing facilities. Specific areas of research include development of new magnesium alloys (role of alloying elements and semisolid processing) for transport and biomedical applications and advanced surface treatments by anodizing and plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) of Al-, Mg- and Ti-based substrates for a wide range of applications.

Research topic
The proposed research lines concern with development of multifunctional surface coatings on light alloys (Al, Mg and Ti) by Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation and evaluation of their functionality with respect to corrosion, mechanical, tribological and bioactive (where appropirate) properties for transport and biomedical appliations.
A particular attention will be given to development and tayloring of "smart biomaterials based on Mg/PEO or Ti/PEO systems, which will combine bioactivity with biodegradability and added functionality, such as antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
The applicants will need a strong background in Materials Science and a good knowledge of Chemistry. Knowledge of and hands-on experience in biomaterials/cell interactions is not compulsory but desirable. "
