Group description
The research group “Virtuosa Pars. Politics and Culture of the Iberian Elites in the Early Modern Period (Spain and Portugal, XVI-XVII centuries)” is part of the Department of Early Modern and Modern History of the Faculty of Geography and History of the University Complutense of Madrid. The group was created in July 2016 and was positively evaluated in 2018 by the Spanish State Research Agency (AEI). The group has numerous research lines with common and cohesive objectives substantiated in several competitive projects about the culture of Iberian elites in Early Modern times. Its primary purpose is to form educational groups and researchers in the study of the Iberian elites (nobility and clergy, with particular emphasis on the regular clergy) of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries within the framework of the Hispanic Monarchy and Restauration Portugal and its overseas Empire. For additional information, see the Department’s website: https://www.ucm.es/modernacontemporanea/ It is one of the largest departments of History in Spain and therefore gathers favourable conditions to generate synergies. Twice a year, the Area of Early Modern History also publishes the journal Cuadernos de Historia Moderna, accredited by FECYT and indexed in ESCI and DOAJ. (See https://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/CHMO)

Research topic
The research group promotes the analysis of practices, models and cultural uses of aristocrats and ecclesiastics, both privileged groups, which were fully aware of their identity as the “Virtuosa Pars” of the political and cultural communities of their time. As most recent historiographical debates examine, the studies focus on events related to the political struggle, the culture of violence at court, the processes of Inquisition and the missionary expansion in the metropolitan and imperial spaces. This Expression of Interest proposes to create a project which analyzes the specific aspect of the transnational noble cosmopolitanism as being an agent of transmission of practices, material objects and knowledge throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
