Group description
ALGOREACH was created with one main goal: the design of custom-made or task-specific intelligent mathematical models for their application in complex processes for fields as diverse as chemical engineering, biochemistry, medicine, or food technology. José S. Torrecilla, Professor of the Chemical Engineering Department of the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), is the leader and main researcher of ALGOREACH. This group is included within a well-established research group of the UCM.

ALGOREACH is formed by researches that specialize on different fields such as chemistry, engineering, biochemistry, and mathematics. This multidisciplinary atmosphere has allowed ALGOREACH to work with a wide variety of research groups from different countries, aiding in the development of both national and international projects with either public or private grants. The results attained from these collaborations have been published in a great number of scientific international conferences and numerous manuscripts in prestigious journals with high impacts within their respective fields. In addition, ALGOREACH has edited books in the areas of expertise that summarize their experience in the research sector. This group has collaborated and still collaborates in the organization, management, and teaching of multiple courses.

Research topic
AlgoReach is currently involved in several research lines relevant to society within the fields of food technology, medicine, and industrial chemistry. Our research covering topics related with food safety and quality control, detection of environmental risks, early diagnosis of diseases, prevention of occupational risks, among others, have been developed in recent years and have led to the participation in and development of a large number of research projects as well as a high number of publications in international journals of high impact.

Some lines of work that are being developed in the group are: (1) Development of spectroscopic and chemical sensors capable of analyzing small volume samples autonomously, reliably, and quickly without sample conditioning operations; (2) Development of intelligent chemical tools, not only for the above-mentioned sensors, but also for other more classic analytical equipment. These custom-developed algorithms are based on machine learning models, chaotic algorithms, fuzzy logic, etc.; (3) Development of wireless communication tools between the sensors, data processing centre, and cloud computing. Likewise, the preparation of user-friendly software is contemplated, allowing for the simple handling of the applications developed and showing the results in an intuitive way, reliably, safely, and quickly, both in portable devices (tablet, smartphones, etc.) and in computers; (4) Electronic integration of each of the parts mentioned in a single device providing portability, reliability, and security compatible with the real-time measurement of variables (in the field, diagnostic area, or production area).
