Postdoctoral Fellowships

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) aim to support the career development and training of researchers in all scientific disciplines through international and intersectoral mobility.

The fellows carry out their own research project in collaboration with a host institution, which is indicated at the time of their application. Researchers of all ages, nationalities and scientific disciplines can apply.

Postdoctoral Fellowships (MSCA-PF) provide an extremely enriching experience, that enhance the career perspectives for researchers by developing new scientific competences and gaining international and collaborative research experience.

The Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) is a public research university located in Madrid, and one of the oldest universities in the world (founded in 1499).

The UCM enrols over 80,000 students, almost 6,000 faculties and more than 3,000 administration and service staff and consistently ranks as one of the top universities in Spain.

Research Groups

There are more than 200 UCM research groups interested in hosting researchers through MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships.

European Office

The Complutense University of Madrid as host institution, through a dedicated European Research Office, supports MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowship candidates both in the application process and in managing the grant.

We offer, among other specific support services, an in-depth review of the proposal by experienced advisors: internal deadline to send the draft proposal to office is August 31, 2021.

What are the MSCA Individual Fellowships?

By means of the MSCA Individual Fellowships scientists have the possibility to gain experience abroad and in the private sector, and to complete their training with competences or disciplines useful for their careers. These actions are meant to support the best, most promising individual researchers from anywhere in the world.

There are two types of MSCA Individual Fellowships:

European Fellowships

Global Fellowships

What does the funding cover?

The grant provides an allowance to cover living, travel and family costs. The grant is awarded to a host organisation, usually a university, research centre or a company in Europe that employs the Experienced Researchers. The research costs and overheads of the host organisation(s) are also supported.

European Fellowships last from one to two years, Global Fellowships from two to three years.

How to apply?

For applying it is necessary to submit a research proposal, including the fellow´s CV. The proposal is written jointly with your chosen host organisation(s) (a university, a research centre or a company).

Proposals are submitted in reply to a call for proposals. All open calls and related information such as the Guide for Applicants and full eligibility criteria can be found at the Participant Portal.

Who can apply?

All candidates interested in applying for an individual fellowship IF 2019 need to be Experienced Researchers (ER), this means to be in the possession of a doctoral degree or have at least four years of full-time equivalent research experience at the time of the call deadline.

The IF proposal has be prepared between the ER and the supervisor of the Host Institution who will recruit him/her.

Eligibility criteria

1. European Fellowships

Allowing mobility between European countries and from Third Countries to Europe. Duration of the projects: 12 to 24 months

Standard European Fellowship

Open to ER of any nationality.
The ER must move or have moved from any country to the Member State (MS) / Horizon 2020 Associate Country (AC) where the host institution is located.
The ER has to comply with the mobility rule: not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the host institution for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the call deadline.

Career Restart Panel (CAR)

Supports researchers who want to resume research in Europe after a break in research
Open to ER of any nationality.
The ER must move or have moved from any country to the MS / AC where the host institution is located.
Break in research: not active in research for at least 12 months prior to the call deadline.
The ER has to comply with the mobility rule: not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the host institution for more than 36 months in the 5 years immediately before the call deadline.

Reintegration panel (RI)

Supports researchers who want to return and reintegrate in a longer term research position in Europe
Open to ER nationals or long-term residents of MS / AC (period of full-time research activity in MS/AC of at least 5 consecutive years)
The ER must move or have moved from a Third Country to the MS / AC where the host institution is located.
The ER has to comply with the mobility rule: not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the host institution for more than 36 months in the 5 years immediately before the call deadline.

2. Global Fellowships

Allowing an initial outgoing phase to a Third Country (TC) and a final returning phase to Europe. Duration of the projects: 24 to 36 months (12 – 24 outgoing phase + 12 months final European phase).

Standard European Fellowship

Open to ER nationals or long-term residents of MS / AC (period of full-time research activity in MS/AC of at least 5 consecutive years).
The ER must move or have moved from any country to the TC of the outgoing phase.
The ER has to comply with the mobility rule in the Third Country of the outgoing phase: not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the TC for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the call deadline (12/09/2016).
The ER is recruited during the whole duration of the project by the European Host Institution.

Tenure-Track Position for Marie Skłodowska-Curie Global Fellowships?

The "Plan de Actuaciones en Profesorado 2020-23 (ES)" of the Complutense University includes among its calls several options for further hiring of researchers with a PhD. All options require an excellent CV and being granted National Accreditation.

Among the requirements for the stabilization of a Researcher to Assistant Professor, it is required that the researcher has spent at least 3 years as a researcher hired by the UCM in a competitive public call.

Global Fellowships are open to researchers currently within or outside Europe who want to move to a Third Country for 1-2 years and then come back to the Complutense University for an additional year. Therefore, researchers who have been awarded a three-year Global Fellowship would be, after the end of the project and with the current regulatory framework, in a position to meet this condition.

In certain situations, it has been possible for a researcher with at least 2 years working at UCM to opt for a position as a junior Associate Professor.
